Synopsis

Smiljevo, a picturesque village in the Dalmatian Hinterland. Learning that her husband, a guest worker in Germany, was killed in a fall at a construction site, young widow Tatjana falls mute with grief for a full 13 months. When she finally speaks again, she uses the money from her husband’s insurance to buy a bare karst hill from an old village woman, despite her sister Ljubica’s disapproval. A year and a half later, the alignment of the new motorway is set to go right over the hill, and Tatjana becomes the richest eligible woman in the area. She realises she has fallen in love with the young local priest Stipan, and Marinko, a rough returnee from Germany, comes back to the village with his daughter Julijana. The likeable haiku poet Stanislav falls in love with Julijana, and the military unit led by father Stipan’s twin brother, general Ivica, comes into Smiljevo…
