Synopsis

After six decades of living and working in Germany, elderly jazz-pianist Stevan Arsin returns home to Serbia to bring to an end a lengthy legal process of restitution of his family estate – fertile land and a dilapidated mansion left to him by his parents. A series of encounters with family members, childhood friends, and a slalom through the challenges of property and legal issues open an unexpected tumultuous chapter in Stevan’s life.

About the director

Želimir Žilnik (Niš, 1942) is a Serbian film director and screenwriter. He started out with socially engaged documentary films: The Unemployed (1968), June Turmoil (1969), Black Film (1971). Social criticism is also a characteristic of his feature films Early Works (1969), one of the central accomplishments of the Serbian black wave, Paradise (1976), The Second Generation (1983), Pretty Women Walking Through the City (1986), The Way Steel Was Tempered (1988), and Wanderlust (1999). He attracted a lot of attention with his return to documentary films with the film Tito Among the Serbs for the Second Time (1993). The breakdown of the system of values in post-transition countries of Central and Eastern Europe, refugee issues, and migration form a framework of the thematic cycle he started with the films Kenedi Goes Back Home (2023), Kenedi, Lost and Found (2005), Soap in Danube Opera (2006), Kenedi Is Getting Married (2007), The Old School of Capitalism (2009), Logbook Serbistan (2015).
