World Premiere of South Wind to Open Pula Film Festival, Urban to Perform the National Anthem

COMEDY SOUTH WIND TO OPEN PULA FILM FESTIVAL

The first film screened at the Arena at this year’s edition of Pula Film Festival will be Ante Marin’s debut feature South Wind. This comedy centres around south wind, which sets in motion a series of unusual events in an ordinary building in an ordinary neighbourhood in Split, leading to misunderstandings, petty scheming, and growing chaos, where even heroes are seen by neighbours as villains. Starring Snježana Sinovčić Šiškov, Donat Zeko, and Stojan Matavulj.

“Seeing how the film was made for the Croatian audience, the Pula Arena is the best possible start for us, as well as an honour and compliment. The audience can expect a good film, a bit of laughter, a bit of tears, and a bit of tension on our Split film collage,” said the director Ante Marin.

OPENING BEFORE THE OPENING

Before the opening ceremony at the Arena, the documentary film Pavilion 6, directed by Goran Dević, will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Istrian National Theatre. This film is  a humorous snapshot of the time of the pandemic, with recordings of conversations with people queueing for vaccines, and reveals the disorientation and scepticism that permeate our collective experience of the pandemic.

Pavilion 6 is a documentary film about us at a time we have already suppressed and forgotten. Looking at the ‘past’ us, pushing in queues for vaccinations and listening to ‘our’ dialogues from the recent, but also distant past, we have a chance to have a good laugh at ourselves, but also wonder what the world we live in has quietly and inevitably turned into,” said Goran Dević.

The first night of the Festival will continue at the terrace of the Festival Centre at the Home of Croatian Veterans with a music programme by DJ Stanko Bondža. Over the next week, the Festival will provide a series of good films, meetings of filmmakers, critics’ duels, panels on hot issues, and great concerts.

A DAY AT THE FESTIVAL

Every day, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Festival Centre will host a public presentation of film crews. The critics’ duel High Noon will then start at 12 p.m., with renowned film critics and journalists discuss and share their opinions about films from the Croatian programme. Croatian films will be screened at the Istrian National Theatre (7 p.m.) and the Arena (9.15 p.m.), where screenings will start 15 minutes earlier than last year. Minority co-productions will be screened at Valli Cinema (4 p.m.) and the Istrian National Theatre (7 p.m.), with presentations by directors or crew members. Films from the new competition programme – Regional programme – will be screened at 8 p.m. at Valli Cinema, with conversations with the film crews.

PoPular Pula is the indispensable programme with screenings at the Arena in the second evening slot, while the always popular films at Ambrela Beach and films from the Time Machine programme will have their own audience. The film programme and schedule are available at the Festival website, as well as announcements of evening concerts held at the Festival Centre’s courtyard. Performances include Konstrakta and Zemlja gruva, Nipplepeople, Miach, IDEM, Rundek Eko Kvartet, and DJ Mario Kovač, as well as numerous famous DJs who will provide entertainment after the concerts long into the night.

PULA FOR FILM PROFESSIONALS

The programme for film professionals will take place at the Festival Centre, Valli Cinema, and the Youth Centre, and will intensify in the second part of the festival week. Other than the pitching of projects at Valli Cinema in the morning, this programme also includes Pula Film Forum – a series of lectures, conversations, and meetings of representatives of Croatian and international audiovisual community. For the first time, the Festival will also include the First Time on Film programme, presenting 13 talented actors and actresses who had their first big roles in films selected for the Festival. The schedule of the all events of PulaPro, which also includes the Student Programme, is available on the Festival website.

PULA TRAVELS

Parallel to the Festival, the Pula Travels programme will also start, screening films from the main programme of Pula Film Festival across Croatia, at more than 30 locations! The aim of this initiative is to provide extra visibility to domestic film and allow for the screening of films to as many audiences as possible in cooperation with cinemas members of the Croatian Independent Cinemas Network, other independent cinemas, and numerous summer stages.
