About the director

Jože Gale (Grosuplje, 1913) was a Slovenian film director and screenwriter. He was educated in Prague, where he graduated from the Theatre Department and later studied film directing. He began his filmmaking career after World War II, first with short documentary films and later with feature films. His greatest success came with the children’s film Kekec (1951), which won an award at the Venice Children’s Film Festival and became a classic, followed by Good Luck, Kekec (1963), also awarded in Venice. Together with Kekec’s Tricks (1968), these films form his renowned Kekec trilogy based on the works of Josip Vandot. In addition to children’s cinema, he also directed notable films on wartime and contemporary themes, and worked as a professor of film directing in Ljubljana.
